A must for those who want to peer beyond the tourist trail this 2021 calendar shows the Wild Atlantic Way in a radical new light. With his Southwest roots Rod Coyne has long been drawn to Ireland’s remote and hostile landscapes. The artist’s desire to record the drama of nature has led to this collection of images channeling the power and energy of a spectacular coastline. Illustrated with sophistication and elegance Rod evokes thunderous waves in your ears and sea salt in your eyes & nose. The calendar is approximately A3 in size (28 x 40cm / 11″x 16″) and features 12 reproductions of Coyne’s favorite recent rugged landscapes.

Gems along the Wild Atlantic Way

The Wild Atlantic Way leads along the Irish west coast starting on the Inishowen Peninsula in County Donegal and ending in the little town Kinsale in County Cork. This equates to the full length and half the with of the island of Ireland. Rod Coyne focuses in depth on the southwest in an effort to understand and depict the region thoroughly.

A home from home

Since his return from Germany to Ireland in 1999 Rod Coyne has perused a search for truth through nature. During these passed two decades he has traveled far and wide recording this Emerald Isle through paint. The Southwest coastline has been a constant in Coyne’s plein air pursuit.

More than a visual experience

“On my first visit to Ballinskelligs, at the heart of the Wild Atlantic Way, I felt a clear sense of genetic memory. My grandmother was raised only a few miles from where I stood. Taking in this radical coastline I recognised the ultimate plein air studio. I need invent no narrative, nature would provide.

Whether painting on a cliff top in the teeth of a storm or with toes buried in soft white sand I am at home creating here.  I stretch to capture the oceanic light show between the heaving blue, green swell. The wild Atlantic’s energy courses through me and onto the canvas.

Gannets, gulls and cormorants spy me working stationary on the shore. In turn I glimpse by dolphins and whales and think of St. Francis.

Salt and spray infuse the air while boisterous gales look to flatten my easel. All my senses are aroused to fever pitch and I feel most alive on Wild Atlantic Way.” -Rod Coyne
