Across Ballinskelligs Bay by Rod Coyne

“Working my way through the five stages of creation (euphoria, purposeful cruising, niggling doubt, total despair, and triumph in the face of adversity) I was stuck on #4, total despair, as usual. The canvas was simply too big for the time available. Converting the landscapes’ green into hot pinks and reds was melting my brain. The wine from lunchtime was making me sleepy. Instead of the invincible artist I felt like that morning, I now felt like a fraud. It was a typical day in the office.

Fortunately I had been here before. I knew I had to somehow encourage, trick or swindle this unruly teenager of a painting into adulthood before Storm Ellen rolled in off the Atlantic. To achieve this I  must forget my misery and focus on the prize. And so it was that we later, spent of energy and spirit, stumbled over the line arm in arm, to success. I wanted a blazing tribute to my home-from-home, Ballinskelligs Bay, and through the grace of the Muse I got there in the end.” – Rod Coyne.

This oil painting was completed en plein air on the southwestern tip of Ireland. It is a triptych, each canvas is 50×70 cm and when framed is 95cm high and 175cm wide.
