Created in south County Kerry, Rod Coyne’s painting “Cill Rialaig Ruins, East”, depicts the famine village in a blaze of colour. Swishing grass stalks wave furiously in surreal landscape of riotous reds, salmons and hot pinks. It is signed on the front and carries a date and inscription by the artist on the reverse.

“On this day I already had a full week of plein air painting under my belt while on residency at the Cill Rialaig International Artists retreat in Co. Kerry. I had been honing a surreal approach to depicting the landscape, my M.O. was to replace Ireland’s forty shades of green with forty shades of red instead. But I was determined to hold onto the colours of the stone and sky in their natural state. This would give the painting a simultaneously familiar yet other worldly presence.

The sun was shining. I was in the zone. I can barley remember the act of painting. Suddenly I was done. I achieved flow that day” – Rod Coyne.
