Throughout the day Rod is on hand with individual tips and techniques for all students appropriate to their level. There is a break for lunch before completing the days work at 4pm. The emphasis is on enjoying the painting process in an informal, friendly atmosphere, and as part of a group dynamic. The workshop is suitable for absolute beginners to experienced painters. It is an ideal chance for those who have dabbled and would like to learn a little more. At the end of the workshop everyone has a picture to take home.

Materials and equipment such as paint, canvases, paper, easels, drawing-boards, brushes and solvents and rags are to be brought along to the class by the student. A list of essential materials is available on request. Alternatively basic drawing and painting materials and equipment can be provided for a surcharge of € 80 for the week. Alternatively students can just hire easels separately at a rate of €20 for the week. Please note all of the above need to be booked in advance.

The Programme

The painting holidays run from Sunday to Friday inclusive, 5 over-nights and 5 days painting. Sunday is a day to travel and check in. and later to meet and greet Rod and the other painters at the Avoca Studio Gallery, next-door to the accommodation. We will be painting at various locations from Monday to Friday, from 10am till 4pm daily.

Accommodation

Our accommodation partner is a 4-star guest house dating from 1780 next to the famous Meeting of the Waters, offering historic period décor and tea/coffee and cakes on arrival.

The individually decorated and spacious rooms are traditionally furnished, with scenic views of the river or garden. All bedrooms have bathrooms with power showers and luxury toiletries, tea/coffee facilities, Irish mineral water, hairdryers, and free Wi-Fi.

Freshly cooked breakfasts are served in the spacious 18th-century dining room, with a wide selection of dishes available. The dining room enjoys splendid views across the Avoca River and Valley while guests enjoy their breakfasts.

Guests can relax in the elegant lounge, featuring an original open turf fireplace and a small library of books, magazines and board games. There is also a covered terrace and outdoor seating areas in the pretty gardens. Free private parking and bicycle hire is available, while fishing is available on the Avoca River, and horse riding is available nearby. Wicklow’s Beaches are just a 10-minute drive away.

Non painters

For that patient, non-painting partners and friends who wish to follow other pursuits, Co. Wicklow offers any amount of exciting and interesting activities. You’re in the heart of a county famous for walking tours, fishing, horse-riding, golf, beaches and historical sites are all within easy distance. And Dublin city is just over an hour by car or train. We are happy to advise on local activities.

Transport

We are located just over an hour’s drive from Dublin airport, and Dublin and Rosslare ferry ports. There are only rare train and bus connections to Arklow Town, which is 10 minutes taxi-drive from Avoca.

We are not licenced to transport students to or from painting locations. We highly recommend bringing your own transport or hiring a car when visiting from abroad.
