Provenance
Allow Rod’s imagery to trigger your untapped memories, emotions and desires.
Created in south County Wicklow, Rod Coyne’s painting “Croghan from Aughrim”, the majestic mountain towering above the village of Aughrim. Coyne’s triptych consists of three separate canvases hung in a line, in a single black frame adding sophistication to any home or collectors wall. It is signed on the front and carries a date and inscription by the artist on the reverse.
This painting was created as a part of Rod’s My Place on Canvas project. That’s a 2014 exhibition celebrating Wicklow landscapes where the public have decided which scenes Coyne would paint. Choosing a selection of those favorite “My Places…” Rod interpreted them in his own distinctive plein-air style. Each canvas has its very own personal back-story which was exhibited alongside the painting.
Here is Irish Rugby International and legend Shane Byrne’s story:
“When I think of my place if feel… grounded.
Periods of my rugby career were spent biding my time. I felt my opportunity
would come and I had to be ready to grasp it with both hands. While getting
myself ready I must have run up and down every hill and mountain
surrounding my home town of Aughrim. On the good days, pushing hard
against the clock, on the bad wondering if this mountain had gotten higher!
I’d reach the top and look around and see the one constant on the skyline,
Croghan Mountain, like a big brother watching down on me.
Every dog has his day and my time came too. Feeling taller then, running
over hilltops felt that little bit easier, easier to get to the top and have a look
back at Big Brother Croghan.”
– Shane Byrne, Aughrim, Co. Wicklow.
