Created in south County Kerry, Rod Coyne’s painting “Ardcost Estuary”, depicts a little known place in a surreal landscape of riotous reds, salmons and hot pinks. Coyne’s painting would make the perfect addition to any home or office for art collectors and landscape fans alike. It is signed on the front and carries a date and inscription by the artist on the reverse.
“I painted this in July 2021. It was one of those very rare days when everything fell into place. On this day I already had a full week of plein air painting under my belt while on residency at the Cill Rialaig International Artists retreat in Co. Kerry. I had been honing a surreal approach to depicting the landscape, my M.O. was to replace Ireland’s forty shades of green with forty shades of red instead. But I was determined to hold onto the colours of the sea and sky in their natural state. This would give the painting a simultaneously familiar yet other worldly presence.
The tide was rising slowly around the dry mound I had set up my easel on. Trout were breaking the surface beside me as the salty water swirled through the sweet. The sun was shining. I was in the zone. I can barley remember the act of painting. Suddenly I was done. I achieved flow that day” – Rod Coyne.
