Avoca Downriver by Rod Coyne

“This is the birthday painting. To be precise it was my present to myself, on the day before a non-de-script birthday. I had had a productive Cill Rialaig residency during the Easter just gone, where I had pushed the envelope in developing my ‘Rod Sees Red’ project. And yet I wasn’t satisfied, I felt those Easter paintings were over developed and in future I needed to pull back and apply less paint. I was hoping less brushstrokes would leave more room for the viewer to enter into the landscape. Less of me should mean more room for mother nature.

Two months had passed and I still hadn’t put that theory into practice. So I promised myself to do it before my birthday, a deadline which naturally went down to the wire. For a change the process went according to plan, plus there was the added bonus that the branches and bushes all left there mark in the wet paint as I battled back to the van. Job done, happy artist, happy birthday” – Rod Coyne.

This oil painting was completed en plein air on the southwestern tip of Ireland. It is a triptych, each canvas is 50×70 cm and when framed is 95cm high and 175cm wide.

“Avoca Downriver” would make the perfect addition to any lobby, office or home for art collectors, Ireland fans alike. It offers a window to an other-worldly serenity. It is signed on the front and carries a date and inscription by the artist on the reverse.
