Miners Cross – Shocking Composition

“I can see the Avoca Miners Cross from my bedroom window. It’s a place I regularly walk to, its a good place to picnic with friends or just hang out and enjoy the distant views. Although I had painted those distant views in the past I never considered the cross itself a subject to paint. And that’s the wonder of the My Place on Canvas project, it allows me to see familiar places with new eyes. And when the time came I was shocked at how such an apparently simply subject could make such a complicated composition. The distant landscape presented no problems but the cross itself created an extreme perspective which took a hell of a lot of drawing before I could cut loose with paint. Therein lay the challenge. The sun set behind the cross as I worked and I couldn’t help feeling moved and uplifted by the whole experience” – Rod Coyne.

Miners Cross – Nomination Text

“When I think of my place I feel thankful to live here. The view from the Avoca Miners Cross takes in several of Wicklow’s most stunning mountains and valleys. It is a very special site in the area as it was erected by the miners many years ago. It is a monument to their faith and toil. It is so peaceful to sit and watch the world go by below. When I look up to the red-kites circling above I realise how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful part of the world.” – Myles, Avoca.

Miners Cross – A Tribute to Avoca Miners

Beneath this soil brave mend did toil
Each day, each night, each year
Mid rock and mud they sweated blood
Through stress and strain and fear

The miners here had much to fear
Their families knew the strain
The stress was like a gamblers wage
With life at stake for gain

Those women too so well we know
Worked through the cold and rain
Their hands so sore from picking ore
No glove to ease the pain…

…As we reminisce of bygon years
And pray for those now gone
We know there days are passing fast
But memories still live on
