“The giddy thrill of vertigo held me transfixed in a boggy field overlooking the tiny land-spit. All the time I paint there’s that niggling compulsion to tumble off the edge and drift like a leaf to the shore below. A more grounded voice in my head assures me that it’s more like a boulder that I would travel and there’ll be no drifting about it. Later, when the painting was done I could barely even hear an echo of my earlier internal dialog. But instead I realised that I had created the portrait of a little piece of Valentia Island, preparing to break off and go seek its fortune. ” – Rod Coyne.
