Created in south County Kerry, Rod Coyne’s painting “Hog’s Head Breeze”, depicts Ballinskelligs Bay, but not as you know it. July grass stalks waves furiously in surreal landscape of riotous reds, salmons and hot pinks. Coyne’s painting would make the perfect addition to any home or office for art collectors and landscape fans alike. It is signed on the front and carries a date and inscription by the artist on the reverse.

“I painted this in July 2021. It was one of those very rare days when everything fell into place. On this day I already had a full week of plein air painting under my belt while on residency at the Cill Rialaig International Artists retreat in Co. Kerry. I had been honing a surreal approach to depicting the landscape, my M.O. was to replace Ireland’s forty shades of green with forty shades of red instead. But I was determined to hold onto the colours of the sea and sky in their natural state. This would give the painting a simultaneously familiar yet other worldly presence.
