Three Sisters by Rod Coyne

“These ‘Three Sisters’ were painted on the last day of a two-week residency at the artist retreat, Cill Rialaig, County Kerry. I had spent the time experimenting and trying to marry my ‘Palette Knife’ style with my earlier ‘Atmospherics’. I felt that I had been successful in that quest, so decided that today’s painting should be just for Rod. Without an artistic agenda in mind the landscape picked be me and forcefully suggested a composition. The previous two weeks had honed my confidence, so colour mixing and paint application just flowed subconsciously. My palette knife was just an extension of my hand. I went at it as carefree as one doodles on the back of an envelope in abstract thought. Every stroke hit the mark. At first, when finished,  I worried that the results were too traditional and not contemporary enough. But later I realised that there is a pure and un-corrupted honesty about this canvas, it’s painted for the love of painting, and it remains one of my all time favorites to this day.” – Rod Coyne.
